How to Choose a University
Identify the programs that align with your career goals and compare outcomes such as graduation rates, job placement, and graduate school acceptance. Research faculty expertise, research opportunities, and internship connections. Visit campuses when possible, and ask current students about workload, campus culture, and support services.
Cost is a major factor. Use each university's net price calculator to estimate expenses after grants and scholarships. Pennsylvania residents should also explore state grant programs administered by the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency, which can significantly reduce costs at eligible institutions.
Trends in University Education
Universities serving the Lehigh Valley are investing heavily in health sciences, data analytics, cybersecurity, and sustainability programs. Partnerships with regional employers create internships and research opportunities, while hybrid and online formats let students balance studies with work and family responsibilities. Many institutions are also emphasizing affordability through tuition guarantees, accelerated degree options, and transfer agreements with local community colleges.
Artificial intelligence is another fast-moving trend. Universities are adding AI coursework across majors, from business analytics to healthcare informatics, and integrating AI tools into tutoring, advising, and research. Students who graduate with both domain expertise and practical technology skills are especially attractive to employers in the Lehigh Valley and beyond.
Making the Most of University Life
Once enrolled, students who get involved early tend to thrive. Join academic clubs, seek out faculty research opportunities, and visit career services during your first year rather than your last. For Allentown residents who commute, building connections through study groups and campus organizations helps create the same sense of belonging that residential students enjoy.

Allentown students do not have to travel far to access exceptional universities. From Lehigh's research labs to Drexel's co-op programs and WGU's flexible online degrees, there is a university path to match every ambition. Careful research and campus visits will help you find the institution that best supports your future.
